What is the Intensive English Program?
The Intensive English Program (IEP) teaches English and academic skills to international students who want to make rapid progress and study in a multi-cultural setting.
After taking a placement exam, students are placed into one of the IEP’s seven levels. During each seven-week session, they take classes in reading, writing, grammar, and communication. Full-time students attend 4 hours of class, Monday – Friday (advanced students may attend a 5th hour). Advanced students take 2-4 required core classes and choose 1-3 elective classes. There is no “drop and add” in the IEP. When students choose or are placed in classes, they must study in those classes for the entire session.
How do I pass to the next level?
IEP teachers look at 3 things when deciding to pass students:
- Class grades
- TOEFL score
- IEP Final Exam score
A student needs to do well on 2 of the 3 categories to pass to the next level.
Please note: Level 3 students must have a 400 TOEFL score to go to Level 4. There are no exceptions.
You will find an example of the Score Report Form at the end of this booklet.
What is the attendance policy?
- Every student is expected to attend ALL classes.
- Attendance records are on evaluation forms and may be on letters of recommendation sent by the program.
- There are NO excused absences. All absences are counted. This is an intensive program.
- The number of absences and the number of classes you take per day determine your absence status.
| Classes per Day | Attendance Warning status |
Dismissal status |
| 5 classes | 20 absences | 40 absences |
| 4 classes | 16 absences | 32 absences |
| 3 classes | 12 absences | 24 absences |
| 2 classes | 8 absences | 16 absences |
| 1 class | 4 absences | 8 absences |
What are the consequences of too many absences?
Stage 1
Probation status: The IEP will put you on probation status when you are absent too many times. You may receive a letter through your teacher. Please see an advisor if you are having problems.
Stage 2
Attendance Warning status: The IEP will put you on attendance warning status when you are absent an excessive number of absences. You may receive a letter through your teacher.
You must see an advisor before registering for the next session. You are responsible for making an appointment.
- You cannot pre-register.
- You cannot be a part-time student next session.
- If you are on attendance warning status two times in two sessions you may be dismissed from the program.
Stage 3
Dismissal status: Your number of absences is beyond the limit for this program. You may not enroll for the next session.
- The IEP will advise your sponsor (if any) to withdraw you from the program.
- You must leave university housing.
- You could lose your US Visa and be required to reapply to stay in the U.S.
Please note:
Your absence status will appear on your final evaluation form.
How can I access computing services?
The IEP Student’s Quick Guide to Computing at Indiana University

|---|---|
| How to change your password |
|
DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSWORD! | |
| How to Log on to your IU Mail | You will automatically have an e-mail address at Indiana University. The address is yourusername@indiana.edu. You can check your mail from any computer with a web browser. Here’s how:
|
| DO NOT forward your IU mail to another account | Many students already have non-IU e-mail accounts. Even though you can set your IU account to automatically send your IU e-mail to your other account, you should never do this. Important announcements are sent to your IU e-mail from the IEP and other Indiana University offices. You are required by the Indiana University to check your IU email account daily. |
| DO NOT allow anyone else to use your account. DO NOT give anyone else your password. This could lead to identity theft, and can cause many problems with your IU online accounts, including your bursar account! | |
|
If you have a computing problem Tell your coordinator or writing teacher. If they can’t help you, they will find someone who can. | |

What is the refund policy?
- IEP cannot refund registration fees because class schedules are based on the number of students who register each session.
- If you are not sure that you want to be in the IEP, you should NOT register.
- The IEP must bill sponsors for a whole session regardless of the student’s length of stay.
What if I have a problem?
- Talk to your teachers, especially your coordinator.
- If your coordinator cannot help, he/she will ask the IEP director for assistance.
- Hopefully, this will solve your problem.
- If you are not happy with the solutions, call 855-6457 or come to the IEP office to make an appointment to see Mr. Howard, the director.
- Your teachers, coordinator, and the director will try to help solve your problems quickly and easily.
