Curriculum :: Programs
There are seven levels in the IEP. All levels meet for 20-24 classroom hours each week. After completing Level 6, most students are ready to begin academic work at a college or a university. However, some additional English may be recommended to help them adjust to their new environment.
Levels 1-4 (Typical weekly schedule)
Levels 1-4 (beginning through intermediate) students use audio-visual and written materials, as well as campus computer and language laboratory resources to develop overall proficiency in English for both personal and professional purposes. These levels give specific attention to speaking and listening, reading and writing, as well as some direct attention to grammar.
Level 5 (Typical weekly schedule)
Level 5 (Intermediate to high intermediate) students continue with the same emphases of Levels 1-4, but they add an additional hour of academic skills and integrate the reading and writing activities more closely.
Levels 6-7 (Typical weekly schedule)
Levels 6 and 7 (high intermediate through advanced) students attend class four or five hours a day with two hours in a core course and two or three hours in electives. The Level 6 core is a high intermediate academic reading and writing class, which focuses mainly on writing. In the Level 7 core, students focus on written analysis of authentic texts in anticipation of the kind of work required by American universities. In addition to core classes, students select two or three hours of electives designed to meet their specific needs and interests. Upper-level students are also encouraged to enroll in a university course which can be taken for credit towards a degree.
